Scientists spot a huge avalanche on Mars

Dramatic avalanches such as this are common on the red planet, particularly in the northern hemisphere during the Martian spring. The avalanche above, which measures about 65 feet (20 meters) across, was seen on a scarp at the edge of Mars' North Polar layered deposits.

This scarp at the edge of the North Polar layered deposits of Mars is the site of the most frequent frost avalanches seen by HiRISE. At this season, northern spring, frost avalanches are common and Hirise monitors the scarp to learn more about the timing and frequency of the avalanches, and their relationship to the evolution of frost on the flat ground above and below the scarp.

Nasa has confirmed it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars by studying marks lefts in gullies on the planet. The marks, or seasonal flows, were spotted in 2011 in Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter images and were later found to lengthen and darken on rocky slopes from late spring to early autumn (as seen in this animation) MY 29 and MY 30 stand for Mars year 29 and 30 and refer to 2008 until April 2011.

Mars has once again captured the world’s imagination with an incredible new image of an avalanche at the planet’s North Pole. 'Mars is not the dry arid planet that we thought of in the past and under certain circumstances we can say that liquid water has been found on Mars,’ said former astronaut, and Nasa administrator, John Grunsfeld.
