This unique joint venture brings treasures spanning 8,000 years, from pre-historic times through to modern day. Τη μακρόχρονη συνεργασία του Μουσείου Μπενάκη με το Ελληνικό Μουσείο της Μελβούρνης εγκαινιάζει μια πενταετούς διάρκειας έκθεση έργων από τις συλλογές του Μουσείου Μπενάκη, που θα παρουσιαστεί στη δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πόλη της Αυστραλίας και σημαντικό κέντρο της ελληνικής διασποράς.

Η έκθεση με τίτλο «Gods, Myths and Mortals: Greek Treasures Across the Millennia» θα παρουσιαστεί από τον Ιούνιο του 2014 μέχρι τον Ιούνιο του 2019 στο Ελληνικό Μουσείο της Μελβούρνης. Αποτελεί δε την πρώτη από μια σειρά εκθέσεων και δράσεων, στο πλαίσιο της δεκαετούς συνεργασίας που έχουν συμφωνήσει τα δύο μουσεία, με στόχο να γνωρίσει το κοινό της Αυστραλίας τους σημαντικότερους αρχαίους πολιτισμούς.

Η έκθεση καταγράφει την επίδραση της ιστορικής και κοινωνικής ανάπτυξης στη διαμόρφωση της ταυτότητας, από τα προϊστορικά μέχρι τα νεότερα ελληνικά χρόνια. Over the next decade, the collaboration between the Hellenic Museum and the Benaki will bring to Melbourne: Neolithic pottery, Cycladic statues, Minoan figurines, Mycenaean jewelry, Hellenistic sculptures, Byzantine icons and manuscripts, Post Byzantine secular art and costumes, and Neo-Hellenic art and weaponry, including ornate swords and pistols belonging to Greek revolutionary heroes Kolokotronis and Mavromichalis. These antiquities recognize and celebrate the development of history, when dynasties reigned, kings conquered, and cities fell. Η έκθεση καταγράφει την επίδραση της ιστορικής και κοινωνικής ανάπτυξης στη διαμόρφωση της ταυτότητας, από τα προϊστορικά μέχρι τα νεότερα ελληνικά χρόνια. Επίσης, διερευνά τη σχέση μεταξύ των θεών, των μύθων και των ανθρώπων και των κοινών στοιχείων τους, που αποτέλεσαν τη βάση για να θεμελιωθούν συμμαχίες, διαιρούμενα όρια και καθοδηγούμενοι πολιτισμοί.

The collections move from mythology to representation; from the Minoans who benefited from trade to the Myceneans who took by force; from the establishment of legends such as the defeat of Troy, to the cyclical nature of beauty as shown through the striking resemblance of Cycaldic statues to modern depictions of the female form in art and media. This vital partnership allows visitors to engage in a sensorial and experiential manner the foundations of our society and culture, while investigating the conceptions and misconceptions of observation, and the benefit of time on forming knowledge and understanding. (φωτ. Συνολικά θα εκτεθούν 92 αρχαία και νεότερα αντικείμενα από τις συλλογές του Μουσείου Μπενάκη, όπως ειδώλια, εργαλεία, αγγεία, κοσμήματα, χειρόγραφα και κοστούμια.

Στα εκθέματα συγκαταλέγεται ένα από τα πρώτα αποκτήματα της συλλογής του Αντώνη Μπενάκη, η χρυσή κύλικα με έκτυπη παράσταση κυνηγετικών σκύλων, που χρονολογείται στην Υστεροελλαδική ΙΙ-ΙΙΙΑ1 περίοδο (15ος – πρώιμος 14ος αι. π.Χ.).

Επίσης, θα παρουσιαστούν μεταξύ άλλων χρυσό στεφάνι από φύλλα μυρτιάς με ένα πολύφυλλο άνθος στο κέντρο (4ος-3ος αι. π.Χ.), τμήμα χρυσού περιδεραίου με κυλινδρικές ψήφους και κρεμαστά εξαρτήματα σε σχήμα κλειστού άνθους (4ος αι. π.Χ.), πήλινο μινωικό ειδώλιο γυναικείας μορφής (1450-1375 π.Χ.) και αττικός ερυθρόμορφος καλυκωτός κρατήρας με παράσταση του Διονύσου, της Αριάδνης και του Έρωτα, που αποδίδεται στον Ζωγράφο της Βιέννης (400-390 π.Χ.).

Antonis Benakis. In addition to the vast collection of Greek antiquities, the partnership also includes access to the Benaki’s collections of Coptic, Chinese, Indian, and African works, as well as one of the world’s most significant Islamic art collections. These collections allow visitors to experience civilisations and histories that are fundamental to the makeup of modern day culture. Special events around the collections further establish dialogue between contemporary Melbourne and ancient cultures, in exploration of Australia’s diverse cultural identity and makeup. Το Κεντρικό Αρχαιολογικό Συμβούλιο γνωμοδότησε κατά την πρόσφατη συνεδρίασή του ομόφωνα υπέρ της έγκρισης του μακροχρόνιου δανεισμού των αρχαίων έργων από τις συλλογές του Μουσείου Μπενάκη (δανεισμός πενταετούς διάρκειας με δυνατότητα ανανέωσης), προκειμένου να παρουσιαστούν στην έκθεση του Ελληνικού Μουσείου της Μελβούρνης.

This belt (Soufli, Thrace, late 18th - early 19th c) is one of several similar pieces coming to the Hellenic museum midyear, denoting the popularity and durability of these practical yet beautiful pieces.
