Saturn Spacecraft Samples Interstellar Dust

Of the millions of dust grains Cassini has sampled at Saturn, a few dozen appear to have come from beyond our solar system. Scientists believe these special grains have interstellar origins because they moved much faster and in different directions compared to dusty material native to Saturn. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

The Cosmic Dust Analyser on the international Cassini spacecraft has detected the faint but distinct signature of dust coming from outside our Solar System, from the local interstellar cloud: an almost empty bubble of gas and dust we are travelling through with a distinct direction and speed. This graphic summarises the location of Saturn, and the Solar System, with respect to the local interstellar cloud, and our place in the Milky Way galaxy. Credit: ESA

The vast amount of space in between stars contains interstellar gas and dust. This dust is made up of small solid particles, like fine sand, and has a major effect on the formation and evolution of galaxies. This artist's impression shows dust forming in the environment around a supernova explosion.
