Πριν από δέκα χρόνια, στις 3 Αυγούστου 2004, το διαστημικό όχημα της NASA MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space Environment) εκτοξεύθηκε από το ακρωτήριο Κανάβεραλ της Φλόριντα με σκοπό την εξερεύνηση του πλανήτη Ερμή.

Το MESSENGER διάνυσε 7,9 δισεκατομμύρια χιλιόμετρα (ένα ταξίδι που περιλάμβανε 15 πτήσεις γύρω από τον Ήλιο, μια γύρω από τη Γη, δυο φορές γύρω από την Αφροδίτη και τρεις φορές γύρω από τον Ερμή, πριν μπει στην τελική του τροχιά, το 2011, γύρω από τον Ερμή.

NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft captured this video during a flyover of Mercury's north pole on June 8, 2014. The image frames were taken once per second while MESSENGER was at altitudes ranging from 115 to 165 kilometers, traveling at a speed of 3.7 kilometers per second relative to the surface. The movie is sped up by a factor of seven for ease of viewing. The images have resolutions ranging from 21 to 45 meters/pixel.
