Athenian Wealth: Millions of Silver Coins Stored in Parthenon Attic

The new study suggests that millions of coins made up the cash reserves of the city-state of Athens and much of this hoard was stored in the attic of the Parthenon.

Millions of silver tetradrachms (like the example shown here at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon) may have been kept in the attic of the Parthenon. Credit: Photo by Marie-Lan Nguyen, CC Attribution 2.5 Generic

A reconstruction of hos it once looked: The attic of the Parthenon is now destroyed and the coins would have been spent in ancient times.

The building, which is now in ruins, was built with as few straight or parallel lines as possible to make it more visually pleasing. The building incorporates different kinds of limestone and marble, including 13,400 stones transported from Mount Pantelakos some nine miles (16km) to the Acropolis. It is believed the spectacular temple took just 15 years to build and was reconstructed in 490 BC.

The Attic talent (a talent of the Attic standard), also known as the Athenian talent or Greek talent (Greek: τάλαντον, talanton), is an ancient unit of mass equal to 26 kg, as well as a unit of value equal to this amount of pure silver.
