Minas. «Ανορθόδοξη πορεία». Minas. “Retrospective”

A retrospective exhibition of works created from 1970 until today, by the painter Minas. The exhibition includes all three different periods of his artistic creation. It concerns a journey through the adventures of domestic avant-garde, as the latter is transformed following the events of May ’68 and the fall of the Junta up to the era of the crisis of the images, of ideology and social values. Minas, with both Beuys and Tsarouhis as guides, lays down passionate and ironical painting, Greek and cosmopolitan simultaneously, while always deviating from conventional choices. The exhibition, organized by the Benaki Museum and the Kourd Gallery, is courated by Manos Stefanidis.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια, το Μουσείο Μπενάκη έχει επιλέξει να παρουσιάζει το έργο καλλιτεχνών που έχουν διαγράψει ήδη σπουδαία πορεία στον χώρο της ελληνικής τέχνης, αλλά είναι ακόμη ενεργοί και δραστήριοι. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, διοργανώνει, σε συνεργασία με την Kourd Gallery, αναδρομική έκθεση του ζωγράφου Μηνά Σεμερτζιάν (Minas), η οποία θα φιλοξενηθεί έως τις 27 Ιουλίου 2014 στο κτήριο της οδού Πειραιώς.

Η έκθεση του Μηνά, την οποία επιμελείται ο Μάνος Στεφανίδης, φιλοδοξεί να παρουσιάσει στο κοινό μια όσο το δυνατόν πληρέστερη εικόνα του πολύπλευρου έργου του καλλιτέχνη. Περισσότερα από εβδομήντα έργα, λάδια, παστέλ, σχέδια και έργα με μικτή τεχνική, θα εκτεθούν στην αίθουσα του πρώτου ορόφου, στο κτήριο της οδού Πειραιώς.

Η έκθεση, με τον τίτλο Minas – Ανορθόδοξη πορεία, έχει μεν αναδρομικό χαρακτήρα, παρουσιάζει όμως μια δουλειά που είναι ακόμη σε εξέλιξη. Τα έργα έχουν φιλοτεχνηθεί από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1970 έως σήμερα και ανήκουν και στις τρεις διαφορετικές περιόδους της καλλιτεχνικής του δημιουργίας, όπως αυτή ωρίμασε ανάμεσα στη Θεσσαλονίκη, την Αθήνα και το Παρίσι, με μικρά διαλείμματα στη Νέα Υόρκη.

Πρόκειται για ένα ταξίδι στις περιπέτειες της εγχώριας αβανγκάρντ, όπως αυτή διαμορφώνεται μετά το Μάη του ’68 και την πτώση της δικτατορίας έως την εποχή της κρίσης των εικόνων, της ιδεολογίας και των κοινωνικών αξιών.

An Armenian born in Salonica who spent his school years in Cyprus, Venice and his adolescence in Paris. Minas didn’t coexist with his peers in the Athens School of Fine Arts and perhaps for that reason, he never felt compelled to express the notion of “Greekness” with as folklore and as much misery this notion acquired, innocent first, through its historical course. The ambivalent nature of his work, on one hand Beuys, on the other Tsarouchis, on one hand romantic idealization of a horse galloping and on the other an aggressive, often spontaneous, form reveal an artist who lives creative contradictions or frustrations and who doesn’t even want to teach or, naively, to touch. Minas is a historical name of Greek avant-garde with many, legendary successes to his credit. Today, he remains an old-rocker who plays alone against the dominant complacency and general aesthetic stupefaction. He lives his life incompatibly – so speaking as poetically as possible – he pays the price of his choices and owes nothing to anyone. He was, and still remains, both European and Greek (in Cavafy’s terms), hardly classifiable and therefore authentic.” Manos Stefanidis - Exhibition curator.

Ο Μηνάς, με οδηγό τον Beuys αλλά και τον Τσαρούχη καταθέτει μια ζωγραφική παθιασμένη και ειρωνική, ταυτόχρονα ελληνική και κοσμοπολίτικη, και πάντα σε «ανορθόδοξη πορεία» προς το κατεστημένο γούστο.

Στην έκθεση παρουσιάζονται έργα από γκαλερί, ιδιωτικές συλλογές αλλά και από την προσωπική συλλογή του καλλιτέχνη. Θα κυκλοφορήσει, επίσης, συνοδευτικός κατάλογος με φωτογραφικές αναπαραγωγές των έργων της έκθεσης και αναλυτικό κείμενο του επιμελητή Μάνου Στεφανίδη.

Minas Semertzian | Biography

1941

Minas Semertzian is born in Thessaloniki on October 8.

His father was of Armenian origin and his mother was Greek.

1953

He enters an Armenian-Greek boarding school in Cyprus.

1963

He moves to Athens, where he works as a graphic designer for an advertising company.

He meets Yannis Tsarouchis.

1965

He begins his studies at the École des beaux-arts of Paris, after receiving scholarships from the Gulbenkian Foundation and the City of Paris’ Museum of Modern Art.

1968

In May ’68, he participates in protests and in the creation of subversive posters. After the events of ’68, he gives up his studies in the École des beaux-arts and works in a flat in Bastille that he has transformed into an atelier. He puts Tsarouchis up for a short period of time. He meets Alexander Iolas.

1972

He holds his first solo exhibition in Galerie 9 in Paris.

1976

He returns to Athens. Ηe presents his work in Athens Art Gallery in collaboration with A. Iolas, who already has many of his paintings in his possession.

1977

He continues their collaboration with an exhibition in Iolas Gallery in New York that Minas is preparing during his stay in the United States for almost a year.

1979

The French Institute of Thessaloniki shows a retrospective exhibition of the artist. Simultaneously, he showcases his latest work in Kochlias Gallery. He lives for a short period in London.

1982

He exhibits in Skoufa Gallery. He goes back to Paris, where he meets the art historian and critic Achille Bonito Oliva with whom he creates a video based on the process of creation of a work by Minas.

1983

He holds an exhibition in Galerie Samy Kinge in Paris, where the video of Bonito Oliva is presented. He participates in FIAC (Galerie Samy Kinge).

1984

He returns to Greece and exhibits in Skoufa Gallery.

1987

He leaves for Tokyo in the context of an exhibition entitled “Mediterranean Flame”. He has an exhibition at the Art Center of Kyoto in Japan.

1996

He exhibits “The issue of image, 1980-1996” in Technopolis City of Athens and presents the “Scrapbook” and the retrospective exhibition “Minas” in Skoufa Gallery.

1998

The Goulandri – Chorn Foundation organizes an exhibition of the artist’s works and an auction in favour of the Spastics Society Athens.

2003

He presents the “Pre-texts” in Diana Gallery – Down Town.

2011

He exhibits the “Naked bodies lying” at Athinais Cultural Center.

2013

Kourd Gallery launches an exhibition entitled “Painting”.
