 Οι πεθαμένοι γονείς μου δεν μπλέκουν ποτέ στα πόδια μου.

Όταν μπω σε κάποιο δωμάτιο το έχουν ήδη εγκαταλείψει,

έχουν βρει ήδη κάποια δουλειά που πρέπει να γίνει

κάπου αλλού στο σπίτι, ο πατέρας μου με την ηλεκτρική σκούπα,

η μάνα μου με το ξεσκονόπανο και το σπρέι. Κατά καιρούς

έχω ακούσει τις παλιές τους παντόφλες να σέρνονται απαλά

πάνω-κάτω στο χολ, ή έχω δει κάτι σαν

το στρίφωμα της φούστας της καθώς χάνεται

πίσω από μια πόρτα. Αφήνω όλα τα είδη καθαρισμού

σε εμφανές σημείο, και κάθε συσκευασία μοιάζει να διαρκεί

για πάντα. «Δεν είναι ανάγκη να φεύγετε!» φωνάζω

κι η ηχώ γεμίζει τα δωμάτια, εκείνοι όμως δεν κοντοστέκονται

ποτέ τους. Αφήνουν τα πατώματα να λάμπουν

πίσω τους, και θυμούνται πάντα να σβήνουν τα φώτα.

My dead parents try to keep out of my way.

When I enter a room they have already left it,

gone off to find something that ought to be done

elsewhere in the house, my dad rolling the Hoover,

my mother with dust rag and Pledge. At times

I’ve heard their old slippers, pattering away

down the hall, or seen for only an instant

what might be the hem of her skirt as it swept

through a door. I leave all the cleaning supplies

where they’re easy to find, and they seem to last

forever. “You don’t need to go!” I call out

through the echoing rooms, but they’ve never

turned back. They leave the floors shining

behind them, and remember to turn off the lights.

Ted Kooser (born April 25, 1939) is a celebrated American poet, author, and educator known for his accessible, imagistic poetry focusing on Midwestern rural life and everyday experiences. He served as the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2004 to 2006 and won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his collection Delights & Shadows.
