H NASA θα ψάξει για εξωγήινους... «Επιτέλους»! Atlast (literally)! Nasa to build the world's most powerful telescope - and it could be our key to finding alien life

Με βάση τα πρώτα δεδομένα που ανακοίνωσε η NASA δημιουργήθηκε μια καλλιτεχνική απεικόνιση του πώς θα μοιάζει το τηλεσκόπιο που θα αναζητήσει... εξωγήινους. With the Hubble Space Telescope aging and a newly revived Kepler Mission, many of the world's leading astronomers are championing the construction of The Advanced Technologies Large Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST) is a concept for a space telescope with a mirror as large as 20 meters across — nearly ten times that of Hubble’s primary mirror — that NASA, the Space Telescope Science Institute and others have been developing for several years now. It's a telescope so huge that it may need to be constructed by astronauts in space rather than being launched aboard a single rocket. Η NASA ανακοίνωσε ότι έχει ξεκινήσει τον σχεδιασμό ενός νέου διαστημικού τηλεσκοπίου. Πρόκειται για ένα πανίσχυρο τηλεσκόπιο οι δυνατότητες του οποίου θα είναι τέτοιες που θα μπορεί να εντοπίσει την παρουσία διαφόρων μορφών ζωής σε μακρινούς κόσμους.

This artist's rendition shows a possible design of a potential successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. A Nasa-led team of experts in now investigating the viability of this conceptual mission, called the Advanced Telescope Large-Aperture Space Telescope (Atlast).

Το τηλεσκόπιο ονομάζεται Atlast (Advanced Telescope Large-Aperture Space Telescope) και επειδή τα αρχικά του είναι όμοια με την λέξη «επιτέλους» δόθηκε η ευκαιρία σε όλα τα ΜΜΕ να κάνουν διάφορα λογοπαίγνια με αυτό.

Look familiar? Atlast would be a successor to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), illustration shown, which is due to launch in 2018. One of Atlast's primary goals will be to address Nasa's 30-year vision, which questions whether we are alone in the universe or not and also how the cosmos truly works.

Η NASA έσπευσε να διευκρινίσει ότι το νέο τηλεσκόπιο θα αποτελέσει τον διάδοχο του διαστημικού τηλεσκοπίου James Webb που σύμφωνα με τον προγραμματισμό θα τεθεί σε λειτουργία το 2018 και θα αποτελέσει τον διάδοχο του πατριάρχη των διαστημικών τηλεσκοπίων, του Hubble. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι το Atlast θα αρχίσει να εξερευνά το Σύμπαν αφού πρώτα θα έχει ολοκληρώσει την αποστολή του το James Webb, δηλαδή στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 2020. Όπως ανακοίνωσε η NASA τα στελέχη της βρίσκονται ακόμη στην πρώτη φάση του εγχειρήματος και διερευνούν τις τεχνικές και οικονομικές παραμέτρους της κατασκευής του Atlast.
